Frieda exhibited!

And it all started on Instagram.

Last weekend I, well, my work was exhibited for the first time. One of the portraits from my series inspired by Frieda Kahlo's style has been accepted and shown as a part of FRAME15 project. And the whole thing happened in Impact Hub Birmingham. What a great honour to be amongst such fantastic artists.

So, first of all here's the print hanging:

The shooting wouldn't be possible without Eva Mevinsky , a make-up artist and also in this case - a model. She styled herself and I shot.Despite make-up I kept it natural, with natural light. And the whole thing started on Instagram, when Eva shared her picture with enormous earrings and I wrote a comment: "You look just like Frieda. Let's shoot Frieda, I always wanted to!". So we did.

The result was much above our expectations: the picture was appreciated so many times on many sharing websites, not to mention Dark Beauty Magazine, and the exhibition of course.

Library of Birmingham

I've finally visited the famous Library of Birmingham. As Wikipedia says: "It has been described as the largest public library in the United Kingdom, the largest public cultural space in Europe, and the largest regional library in Europe."

This is an old shooting I did in Warsaw, in August 2012. Believe me or not, we shot just outside my block of flats, in the city centre of one big, still communistic in architechture capital. This few bushes can't even be named as a park - but place is not so important, as long as you can show it properly on you picture. That's what I think, that's what I have to do very often.
What is more: it was the middle of summer holidays, but the rain was pretty bad that day. And it was cold. I love when my models are flexible enough and don't mind to get wet or cold, but I hate to make them suffer. Fortunately Dobrochna was great.

holidays

So holidays are over, even for me. It's been a while since my last blogging, due to my long expected journey and holidays in Poland (it's funny though when I'm writing about going for holidays to Poland, it's not typical). Last time since I've been home and seeing my family was almost two years ago, when I was leaving Warsaw behind. And after that many things changed and I had to learn a hard life lesson.

Anyway, I was enjoying las days mostly by... many shootings. I've worked with creative, talented people, great models and I was having lot of great time. And now I can work on it. As fashion shootings are not ready yet, today I'm going to share some garden photos.

Basia - who am I?

I never thought before about writing abot myself, to be honest, for such person as I am it's rather hard. I always believed, that pictures speak for themselves, so why bother anyone about me? But since I'm starting to continue with blogging seriously, I feel like you need to get to know me first. Well, only some basics for the beggining.

Who am I?
When anyone asks me about it I'm alway answering: I'm a photographer, that's pretty obvious. My name is Basia, which is shot form of Barbara, Polish form as I am Polish, born and raised (and what is more, born in communism). I've finish political studies with journalism elements in Jagiellonian University in Cracow and got a master degree. After that I started cultural and photojournalism studies in Warsaw. Since December 2012 however I don't live in Poland, but in Birmingham, UK. What will be next - time will show. From that time I did many things, mostly trying to survive anyhow, in rather hard physical work in a factory. Two months ago I started with some photographic work and now I am still looking for assignements and freelancing.
Being a photographer might be challenging, but it's the best thing that had happened to me.

So what about photography?
It was always my obvious interest. My parents used to have few soviet traditional cameras and while being 4 or 5 year old I used to play with them without a film, just pretending that I'm taking pictures. Each year on holidays I was asking about taking one or two shots - films and developing were really expensive. So finally, when I started high school and turned 15 I got my own, soviet as well, camera, Zenith 11. I had to be very carefull as I had only 36 photos to take on one film. It was the best way to learn photography, and I still think the same, because it thought me awareness, patience and not wasting trials for many not valuable pictures.
While starting studies in Cracow I became more and more serious abot photography, started to watch good artists and their work and think critically about mine, but I never dared to let it to my mind that I can acually BE a photographer. My subjects of interests were very simple: reflections, some compositions of nature and every day use objects, streets of Cracow, some self portraits and finally people close to me. With people there was always a problem - I was extremely shy, so it had to be someone I already knew well. And after a while, when I was finishing my studies, I started to shoot with models, fashion, portrait and beauty photography. It was a great discovery and is still my favourite one to do.
